Welcome, Vermont Library Cohort!

Our nationwide rollout continues with eight libraries from Vermont joining
the Sustainable Library Certification Program (SLCP). Working with the
<https://www.vermontcf.org> Vermont Community Foundation and the
<https://www.vermontlibraries.org> Vermont Library Association, these
libraries secured funding through to form a cohort that will go through the
process of becoming certified. Each library will be working through the
certification benchmarks with support and collaboration from their peers who
are taking on this challenge together. In a rural location like Vermont,
having the opportunity to go through this process with other libraries at
the same time will help build community within already familiar networks,
while also allowing these libraries to share ideas and resources with other
<https://sustainablelibrariesinitiative.org/node/3828> SLCP libraries across
the country.

Member News

This month we also welcome <https://wbab.suffolk.lib.ny.us> West Babylon
Public Library in Suffolk County, NY. The commitment to sustainability from
the libraries of Suffolk County continues to be a model for other regions.
There are 7 certified libraries in Suffolk County, NY, and 12 others working
to become certified.

Sustainability Spotlight

Trex Plastic Recycling

Libraries all over the US are joining the <https://recycle.trex.com> Trex
Community Challenge. This program supplies libraries with a receptacle to
collect plastic film for recycling. Trex partners with many regional and
national chain stores to serve as plastic film drop off centers. Once
collected and weighed, libraries can drop off the plastic film at convenient
locations. Trex has partnered with several grocery store chains and national
retail store chains to provide drop off locations. Collect 500lbs of plastic
for recycling and earn a free Trex bench for your library. We love the
example set by <https://mamakatinglibrary.org> Mamakating Library, where,
as part of their work for certification, they have collected enough plastic
to earn several benches. When they ran out of room on their property, they
raffled off the bench that they earned as a library fundraiser. For more
information, see the
<https://sustainablelibrariesinitiative.org/trex-decking-community-challenge
> Trex Community Challenge page on our website.

New Online Resource

The <https://climatechangelibrarylab.wordpress.com> Climate Change Library
Lab was developed as a project by the
<https://www.ala.org/educationcareers/leadership/emergingleaders> ALA
Emerging Leaders Program and sponsored by the ALA's
<https://www.ala.org/rt/nmrt> New Members Round Table. This website contains
resources that have been compiled from trusted websites and organizations
that focus on how climate change will impact our communities and how we can
prepare and respond to these threats. There are case studies from libraries
that have experienced extreme weather events or natural disasters. There are
also resources for preparing your institution for these events. The
'Additional Resources' Tab includes an Environmental Justice page that lists
books, articles, videos, and podcasts on this topic.
