SLI pilots Academic Library Certification Program

Our Academic Library Certification Program is being piloted by Michelle
Young <https://www.clarkson.edu/people/michelle-young> , Dean of Libraries
at Clarkson University <https://www.clarkson.edu> located in Potsdam, NY.
We are actively working with Michelle to incorporate her feedback to make
sure that this program is as rigorous and achievable as the Public and
School Library Certification Programs. Stay tuned for more announcements as
we prepare to fully launch the Academic Library Certification Program.

IFLA Green Library Awards

This year's
<https://www.ifla.org/news/6th-ifla-green-library-award-2021-results/> IFLA
Green Library award winners were announced in August. This international
award recognizes libraries whose buildings, programming, or information
resources display a commitment to environmental sustainability. In 2019, the
SLI was recognized with as one of five
<https://www.ifla.org/ifla-green-library-award-2019-winners-announced/>
Runners Up for these awards and invited to present at the IFLA World
Congress in Athens, Greece.

The IFLA Green Library
<https://www.ifla.org/g/environment-sustainability-and-libraries/ifla-green-
library-award/> awards align strongly with the SLI's mission of providing
libraries with the resources and a guided path to steer their actions in a
more sustainable direction. Taking a look at what libraries around the world
are being recognized for in terms of sustainability can help inform and
inspire further action by our organization and our member libraries.

This year's "Green Library Award" was given to the Stanley A. Milner Branch
<https://www.epl.ca/milner-library/> of the Edmonton Public Library
<http://epl.ca> . Seven out of the twenty-one branch libraries that are part
of the Edmonton Public Library are housed in LEED Certified Buildings. The
Stanley A. Milner building has a number of environmentally sustainable
features <https://www.epl.ca/milner-leed/> including bicycle storage,
electrical vehicle charging stations, and close proximity to public transit.
They have cut their water usage by about 30% by installing low flow water
fixtures and have cut 20% of their energy use through energy efficient
design in their building remodel. As part of their construction project,
they were able to repurpose 60% of their building structure and recycled 90%
of the construction waste that was generated. Acknowledging that the library
is located on Indigenous lands, the library responded to community feedback
and created a space to connect with Indigenous teaching and languages, the
Thunderbird House <https://www.epl.ca/milner-library/thunderbird-house/> .

The winner of the IFLA "Green Library Project" award was the "Responsible
Library as Promoter of Green Awareness
<https://www.ouka.fi/oulu/library/sustainable-library> " project from the
Oulu City Library <https://www.ouka.fi/oulu/library/> in Oulu, Finland.
Goals of this project included building awareness of environmental issues
through programming, library communications and social media, trainings,
events, and newsletters. This outreach was focused on both their local
communities and their staff. Additionally, they worked to minimize the
environmental impact of the library and to plan for action on sustainable
development in the future. As part of this project the library worked to
model a Sustainable Library 2030 Roadmap
<https://www.ouka.fi/documents/1448405/0/Sustainable+library+2030+roadmap+su
mmary.pdf/6907b380-0049-4792-a1f6-330044e2ebb3> based on the 2030 Agenda
for Sustainable Development <https://sdgs.un.org/2030agenda> . The library
staff, patrons, and environmental experts were consulted for input on what
measures could be taken to create environmental awareness in their
community, reduce their environmental impact, plan for sustainable
construction, and involve their patrons and staff in creating a lasting
conversation about the environmental, social, and cultural goals for their
institution.

The objectives of this project may sound very familiar for anyone aware of
the SLI. Where our program differs is the development of our benchmarking
certification program
<https://sustainablelibrariesinitiative.org/about-us/program-faq> that is
flexible and implementable at libraries of all sizes and adaptable for the
needs of our members' communities.

Instead of each library figuring out for themselves what actions should be
taken to create a more sustainable organization and resilient community, the
SLI <https://sustainablelibrariesinitiative.org> has worked hard to think
through what actions and changes would most impact libraries and the
communities that they serve. With our certification program we have answered
the question of what practical actions can be taken to make your library
sustainable. In addition to guiding each of our member libraries on their
path to sustainable decision making through the step by step action items,
our certification program participants are matched with a peer mentor and
have the opportunity to meet and network with other libraries who are on the
same path as they work through the certification process.

Vendor Spotlight: CCP Solutions

Last month we highlighted PrintReleaf <https://printreleaf.com> , a cloud
platform that facilitates Global Reforestation to offset paper usage. This
month, the Sustainable Libraries Initiative
<https://sustainablelibrariesinitiative.org> is featuring the vendor that
provides this program to businesses, libraries, the Suffolk Cooperative
Library System, and to the SLI. As a business, CCP Solutions
<https://www.ccpcopy.com/library-solutions/> , a leader in providing
innovative Office Technology Solutions, has demonstrated their commitment to
the environment by offering the PrintReleaf platform to their customers at
no additional charge. CCP Solutions
<https://www.ccpcopy.com/library-solutions/> Vice President, Wayne Piskin
has long concerned himself with the environmental impact of his copy
machines and printers and the paper that these systems consume. We recently
asked Wayne to tell us more about his commitment to libraries and to the
environment:

Tell us about your business' commitment to working with libraries:

CCP Solutions <https://www.ccpcopy.com/library-solutions/> has been the
region's leading provider of the full range of innovative document solutions
to libraries for 47 years. We have in our DNA a deep understanding of
libraries' unique needs as they seek to expand their services and relevance
to the general public while controlling costs. Our focus is to allow our
clients to bring the latest copying, printing and scanning technology to
their patrons while enhancing revenue and optimizing operations.

Please describe the importance of sustainability to your business:

CCP Solutions <https://www.ccpcopy.com/library-solutions/> is strongly
committed to fighting global warming. We have known for quite some time that
the levels of CO2 were increasing dramatically due in large part to massive
deforestation occurring throughout the globe. Trees, the world's most
amazing natural storehouses of carbon dioxide when destroyed, release carbon
into the atmosphere. CCP Solutions as a major Kyocera copier and printer
dealer to hundreds of businesses colleges and libraries throughout the
Northeast realized we were contributing to the problem. We knew there had to
be a way to reduce the massive environmental impact of paper being printed
on our customer's machines. In 2014, after a great deal of research, we
located a startup company called PrintReleaf <https://printreleaf.com> that
had just developed a unique cloud platform to automate global reforestation
for paper-based products. They could accurately measure a company's paper
consumption then make it actionable. Using PrintReleaf's custom web-based
dashboard interface customers were now able to actively participate in
choosing where they wanted to reforest their consumption through a network
of PrintReleaf Certified Global reforestation Projects. CCP Solutions is
very proud to be a part of the Sustainable Libraries Initiative
<https://sustainablelibrariesinitiative.org> and to be able to provide
PrintReleaf at no cost to any library that is on the way to becoming
certified.

Member News

Our Certification Program Members have been building momentum over the last
few months. We have seen interest from all around New York State and are
hoping to continue to build on this. The SLI Coordinator, Annemarie Gordon,
is available to meet with prospective member libraries either in person (for
libraries on Long Island) or virtually to go over the Certification process,
give an overview of the Benchmarks, and preview the website user interface.
Contact us <mailto:sliadmin at suffolknet.org> to schedule a meeting.

This month we welcome Sachem Public Library <https://www.sachemlibrary.org>
as an SLCP Member. Our School Librarian Certification Program has seven new
enrollees who will work towards certification throughout the school year:
Debbie Armbruster, Aileen Basulijevic, Beth Davis, Beth Green, Ashley
Grillo, Sheila McIntyre, and Paula Michalak. We also have three new
Individual Members registered. We extend a welcome to all who have joined!
