Breaking News

Lisa Kropp, Director of Lindenhurst Memorial Library
<https://lindenhurstlibrary.org> has been elected to serve as Coordinator
for ALA's Sustainability Round Table <https://www.ala.org/rt/sustainrt> . In
this leadership position, she will bring her experience as an Advisory Board
member of the Sustainable Libraries Initiative
<https://sustainablelibrariesinitiative.org> and her passion for libraries
as a model for sustainable and resilient communities.

Expanding Our Reach

nitiative-certification-program-libraries>

Our program is growing! It is exciting to share this snapshot of the
libraries enrolled in or certified by our program. An interactive version
<https://sustainablelibrariesinitiative.org/news/map-sustainable-libraries-i
nitiative-certification-program-libraries> of this map is now on our
website. We aim to expand both within New York State and beyond in the
months ahead. We have already put sustainability and the Triple Bottom Line
<https://sustainablelibrariesinitiative.org/media/document/69#page=3> on
the radar for libraries in NY with our Roadmap
<https://sustainablelibrariesinitiative.org/resources/professional-developme
nt/roadmap> and Certification Program
<https://sustainablelibrariesinitiative.org/about-us/program-faq> , we are
now looking forward to seeing libraries and communities throughout the
country and even outside of the US join our efforts. If your library is
looking to showcase your hard work in environmental conservation, social
equity, and financial stability, contact us
<mailto:%20sliadimn at suffolknet.org> to join our program!

Website Updates

We encourage you to browse through the information on our website
<https://sustainablelibrariesinitiative.org> frequently to stay informed of
the news <https://sustainablelibrariesinitiative.org/news> , events
<https://sustainablelibrariesinitiative.org/events/month> , and resources
<https://sustainablelibrariesinitiative.org/resources> that are important
to our mission. New items are being added to the
<https://sustainablelibrariesinitiative.org> Sustainable Libraries
Initiative website regularly. The
<https://sustainablelibrariesinitiative.org/resources> Resources tab is
where you will find the Final Presentations created by the libraries that
have achieved the Sustainable Libraries Initiative Certification. These
presentations showcase the efforts that libraries have made to think and act
sustainably as part of the certification process and the impact it has had
in their community. There is a
<https://sustainablelibrariesinitiative.org/resources/professional-developme
nt/roadmap> Newsletter and Roadmap section that includes links to our latest
newsletters and the complete archive of past newsletters. There are many
great programming ideas and interesting articles in this archive. The
<https://sustainablelibrariesinitiative.org/resources/professional-developme
nt> Professional Development section of
<https://sustainablelibrariesinitiative.org/resources> Resources offers an
exhaustive reading list including ALA documents and statements related to
sustainability, links to columns in national library periodicals, and books
on the topic. Finally, the
<https://sustainablelibrariesinitiative.org/news> News page contains
interesting stories about our members and about libraries and sustainability
topics nationwide.

There are additional resources available to members in the Members Only
Resources section of the User Dashboard. There are new member orientation
documents, policy examples, and resources specific to each certification
path (public, school, or academic library). We are continuously working to
compile, update, and share resources with our members.

Member News

We are excited to welcome two new members to our certification program this
month. <https://mamakatinglibrary.org> Mamakating Library in Wurtsboro, NY
is part of the Ramapo Catskill Library System <http://www.rcls.org> .
<https://www.harborfieldslibrary.org> Harborfields Library in Greenlawn, NY
is part of the Suffolk Cooperative Library System
<https://portal.suffolklibrarysystem.org> on Long Island.

Recognition is also in order for <https://www.longwoodlibrary.org> Longwood
Public Library, who have submitted their completed benchmarks for review.
This review and revision process is currently underway and we expect to be
celebrating their achievement in becoming certified very soon. As part of
their Green Business Partnership <https://www.greenbusinesspartnership.org>
Certification, <https://www.longwoodlibrary.org> Longwood Public Library
highlighted their use of natural light in their building. The combination of
natural light, overhead, and task lighting is a flexible way to use only the
energy you need to illuminate your public spaces.

The <https://www.shelterislandpubliclibrary.org> Shelter Island Public
Library partners with a local non-profit, the Sylvester Manor Educational
Farm <https://www.sylvestermanor.org> for the Shelter Island Seed Library
<https://www.eastendbeacon.com/shelter-island-launches-a-seed-library/> .
They also collaborate to offer children's story times during farm stand
hours and programming such as Introduction to Vegetable Gardening.

In July the <https://highlandlibrary.org> Highland Public Library hosted a
free seminar series as part of the UCCRA Zero Waste Seminar Project
<https://highlandlibrary.org/ucrra-annouces-zero-waste-seminar-project/> .
These sessions aimed to raise awareness of the environmental consequences of
single use plastics, pollution, and waste on our health as individuals and
communities. One of the partners in this series, the New York State
Pollution Prevention Institute <https://www.rit.edu/affiliate/nysp2i/> , has
additional on- demand webinars
<https://www.rit.edu/affiliate/nysp2i/workshop-presentations> available on
their website.
