[SCLA] Final Reminder: SCLS Outreach Programs on August 28th and August 29th

Dear Library Colleagues, 

Please join us next week for the following Outreach programs. 

On Monday, August 28th (Virtual), representatives from ACCES-VR, Commission for the Blind and the Suffolk Independent Living Organization (SILO), will provide information on employment related/vocational training programs and services for people with disabilities. People with disabilities remain one of the most unemployed populations across the country. This program may be of particular interest to library staff working with teenagers, as many times young adults with disabilities (most especially learning disabilities) are not connected with the services they need. This program begins at 11:00am. These organizations/agencies work with people of all ages, provide assessments, employment counseling and work with individuals to develop the skills they will need to live independent and successful lives.  

On Tuesday, August 29th (IN-PERSON at SCLS). This is the second meeting of Public Libraries and Community Emergency Preparedness. This meeting focuses on the role public libraries can play in the community preparedness process. Our emergency preparedness partners from FEMA and the Suffolk County Office of Emergency Management, will be part of the roundtable discussion. We welcome all library staff to be part of the ongoing conversation. This group will meet three times a year, in an effort to develop programming and services to address emergency preparedness needs of each community. The meeting will take place in the SCLS auditorium from 10:00am to Noon.

Vocational/Employment Resources for People with Disabilities

Virtual - via Zoom

Monday, August 28th | 11:00am - 12:00pm

This program will highlight the vocational rehabilitation services available through ACCES-VR (Adult Continuing Education Services-Vocational Rehabilitation). The agency’s primary goal is to assist individuals with disabilities to achieve and maintain employment and to support independent living through training, education, rehabilitation and career development. This presentation will be followed by a presentation from the Suffolk Independent Living Organization (SILO), highlighting their Peer Support Services for people with disabilities.

Public Libraries and Community Emergency Preparedness
